British painter and writer Raymond Briggs has died, and publisher Penguin Random House, citing the Briggs family, said he died Tuesday morning at the age of 88. The Briton is best known for his portrayal of a snowman in the children’s book of the same name, which was published in 1978 and has sold 5.5 million copies worldwide.

“We know Raymond’s books have been loved by millions of people around the world who will be saddened to hear this news,” the family said in a statement. Briggs hung fan drawings, especially children, on his wall and he really appreciated it. “He shared his sense of humor and eccentricity with his family and circle of artist friends—at get-togethers, masquerades, and summer picnics in the park.”

Illustrated masterpieces

In the 80s, in addition to children’s books, Brigg’s work “When the Wind Blows” about the fate of an elderly couple before and after a nuclear disaster caused an uproar.
