Kerala Floods: To all tourists over the world, Kerala itself is a dream destination. Be it rivers, backwaters or hills – the state itself is a dream come true. But the magnificent landscape is now facing devastating floods and God’s own country has become God’s own curse.
The state is facing the worst flood in 94 years. 44 rivers, 55 dams and 1500 km of backwater canals – the state has witnessed nightmare of a different magnitude!
Anyhow the question was raised whether the state Government is also responsible for such. The situation of Kerala is indeed grim and there have been incessant calls for flood relief from all corners of the state.
The first and foremost complain against the Communist government is, the state failed to take note of the calamity until it assumed catastrophic proportions. In the past one month or the other, the situation worsened but the real call has been made only a few days back.
Lack of preparation hasn’t helped the case at all. The way the state government stressed on getting money rather than a request of deploying central forces, the intention of the state government has been put on the question.
Over the last three months, more than 320 people have died. Lakhs of people have been displaced and whatever flood relief has been sent, looks much meager considering the situation.
The state has received three times of the normal rainfall. When the water levels in rivers and reservoirs were rising with ominous rain forecasts, the state government delayed in asking for assistance from the central government. This actually played a spoilsport and didn’t help the case of the flood-affected people.
When the threat of a flood was looming large upon the state, the Pinarayi Vijayan Government looked absolutely clueless. The blatant ignorance of the warning signs didn’t at all help the cause and now, only time will tell how much the state will be able to recover in the days to come. Revenue-wise, Kerala depends much on the tourism industry. Thus this flood has indeed been a curse to God’s own state.
