Dismissing the plea filed by Thiravium Nadar’s kin either to stall the release of “Kaala” or to pass an order to the filmmakers to carry credits acknowledging that the story was based on the life and times of Thiravium Nadar, the Chennai High court has observed that the case is devoid of merits and the petitioner has failed to produce enough evidence to prove his claim that Thiravium Nadar and his family is portrayed in bad light.

Petitioner Muthuramesh had claimed that the film was based on the life of Thiravium Nadar, a leader of migrant Tamils in Dharavi, where the film is set in.

Noting that Thiravium Nadar had moved to Dharavi in 1956 and emerged as a leader of Tamil migrants who lived in Dharavi then.

Jawahar, Thiravium Nadar’s son who appeared before the court submitted that the plea was filed with his consent and prayed that all he wanted was a credit line in the film saying it was based on his father’s life.

When Justice Raja, who heard the submission demanded to know the exact scenes in the film in which his father is shown in bad light Jawahar could not reply satisfactorily but only put in a request to carry a credit line in honour of his father.

Objecting to this, PR Raman, the counsel for the filmmakers said while the petitioner originally wanted the film to have stayed, the son of Thiravium Nadar wants nothing more than a credit line, which is in itself is contradictory in nature.

Hearing the arguments on both sides, Justice Raja dismisses the case on the grounds that the petitioner has failed to produce enough evidence for his claims.

“The Censor Board has certified the film and it is released in the theatres all over the world and the plea to carry the credit line is devoid of merits” the court observed.
