Is The Narendra Modi Government Taking Farmer Protests Too Lightly?

The 10 day long all India farmer protests agitation is already creating ripples in the nation. It may be the case that media isn’t reporting or flashing it as ‘breaking news’ but a serious deficit is quite clear right now. It would be an absolute shocker to say that farmers are protesting to gain ‘media limelight’.

Even if, for the sake of logic, the movement can be termed as politically motivated, the protests are already causing inconvenience for people of the country.

Rise in prices of vegetables, fruits and commodities are bound to happen someday soon. Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has completely misjudged the situation and BJP may have to serious price for taking such a casual approach to the whole agitation.

Agrarian crisis is a grim reality in a third world country and India is no exception to that. The agitation has symptoms of a serious disease or deeper malaise. The basic problems have been right prices for the products, access to affordable storage facilities, exploitation by state or political party sponsored middlemen and loan waiver.

The issue of loan waiver has been a matter of great debate for India. Time and again, it is proved that loan waiver is more of a political gimmick or cheap populist stance than a long-lasting solution.

Be it a centrally sponsored or a state-sponsored, farmer loan waiver schemes have not helped the agrarian economy either. In fact, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the farm infrastructure of India is one such arena which has been time and again neglected.

Be it UPA or NDA, most of the recent governments at the center have failed to come up with feasible agrarian reforms. One dimensional Urbanization hasn’t helped either, rather it has demotivated the whole domain of farming in India.

Minimum Support Price (MSP) and crop insurance could have been extremely helpful in this aspect but the central government has not only failed to appreciate this but also proved to absolutely lack luster to come up with a plan to boost the agrarian economy.

The issue of land holding is another aspect which hasn’t been discussed or appreciated. Be it equipment, labor or crop treatment – the costs have escalated manifold and farming itself has become a loss-making venture right now.

Let’s not forget the impact what demonetization had on the whole agrarian sector. It is high time that PM Narendra Modi appreciates the shortcomings in this key sector or else farmer agitation can be a huge roadblock to Narendra Modi’s aspirations of a second term in Delhi.
