Should Indian Army Withdraw Unilateral Ceasefire In Jammu & Kashmir?

Before the holy month of Ramadan, the Indian government announced a unilateral month-long ceasefire in Jammu & Kashmir. But, recent events do not indicate that anti-national operatives have stopped creating mayhem in the valley. In fact, there has been the rise of recruitment of local youths into militant groups. There has been a consistent rise in infiltration from various sides of the Line of Control (LoC). In between, two BSF personnel have been killed as Pakistan has violated ceasefire in the valley.

The most disheartening aspect in the holy month of Ramadan is, Pakistan has breached the 2003 ceasefire act as the Pakistani troops were indulging in non-stop shelling and firing on the International border in Jammu. Apart from the casualties, 10 civilians were injured who were shifted to Government Medical College.

A militant was killed in Keran sector in Kupwara and further infiltration was foiled in the border. The internal situation in the valley is also alarming. The recent incident of 2 CRPF Jawans being run over is also a grim reality in the valley. As the driver of the armored vehicle, Roop Singh lost consciousness when a stone hit him in the head and the truck ran over the motorcyclists in front.

Meanwhile, 20 more local Kashmiri youths have joined the militant groups in the last month and another 16 are missing right now. The Kashmir unit of the Islamic State, Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, and other pro-Al-Qaeda groups are active in the valley.

Altogether, data shows that the highest number of youths have joined the militant groups since 2010. In the last year, 126 youths had picked guns and this number the number looks to exceed by a huge margin. No doubt, the situation in the valley is alarming and a cause of serious concern for the Indian government.
