Soukarya Ghosal’s ‘Rainbow Jelly’ Promises Hope In The World Of Hopelessness And Heartbreaks

Filmmaking is by no means a lost art. The success as a whole depends on the dexterity of the director, his vision and distinct aim or purpose and Director Soukarya Ghosal’s Rainbow Jelly is a perfect combination of such. The film effortlessly portrays dreams and fantasies of young Ghoton with so many colorful layers and shades.

Ghoton lives in the cruel and uncompromising world of Gondaria, his uncle who doesn’t miss any moment to remind him of his congenital disabilities. The autistic world of dreams and incarnations gets a colourful makeover when Ghoton’s Pori Pishi aka Sreelekha Mitra comes in.

She reveals her a secret – if he can serve his uncle food of seven colours, his uncle will be transformed into a nice person! The surreal world of food fantasy and restlessness ushers new hope for Ghoton, as he gets comfort with the fact that one day his life will change. His world of struggle and adjustments welcomes Poppins, who lives in their adjacent house.

Pori Pishi’s world of aeroplanes and rainbow jelly brings him in a new dilemma – will the world ever change for him? The film ends amidst hope as Ghoton ushers a new journey of life and promises to be a scientist who will fulfill the hopes of his late father.

The director, Soukarya Ghosal has taken a great risk in the film by casting young Mahabratra Basu who is incidentally autistic and fumbles in real life.

The story of the film is simple and yet beautiful with its wonderful treatment. After a long time, the cityscape of old Kolkata looked so poignant in the eyes of Ghoton and Gandoria aka Kaushik Sen has truly revolutionized traditional villain’s role with terrific minimal acting.

His subtle change in facial expression while tasting different food underlines his ability to understand and rationalize tricky filmy characters. Be it Sreelekha Mitra or Shantilal Mukherjee – the film has such powerful actors who have ultimately shaped up the climax in a befitting manner.

Credit goes to editor Arghyakamal Mitra and Nabarun Bose in music for complementing the thematic essence of the film. No doubt, avid Bengali readers can correlate it with the era of Leela Majumdar and her much famed character Podi pishi. It would be an understatement to say that this film is a tribute to every special child around the world.

Rather, the storyline depicts how troubled childhood can transform the innocence of a child. The use of motifs in the film is interesting to say the least. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that societal dark humour has been subtly used in the film.

Nevertheless, the projection of the film is undoubtedly a very convincing eye opener to the viewers, providing enough mettle to counter such problems and make the world of such children a sea of hope and fulfillment.
