Frustrated over the failure of the Khattar Government in Haryana hundreds of Dalit families from Jind converted to Buddhism. Dalit members said that they are frustrated over the Haryana Government’s inaction and failure to provide security to the community after the gang rape of a Dalit girl.

The conversion took placed after 113 days of protests by the members of the community against the state government. The move is regarded as one of the biggest setbacks to Haryana government’s focus on reaching out to the Dalit community.
Before that the members of the Jat community too expressed frustration and anguish against the BJP Government in the state. Now the Jat leaders threatened to stop any political rally of BJP before the state election.
Reacting to the conversion a senior Haryana minister said that people have their freedom to convert any religion and there must be some personal reasons. It has no political role.
The opposition party said that it is due to BJP’s policy of neglecting the Dalit and other communities and this led these Dalit people to take recourse to mass conversion.
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala said that Khattar government should be dissolved as it failed to maintain law and order in the state. Governor rule should be imposed in the state as soon as possible.
The Dalit leaders allege that when CM Khattar came to Jind on 27 May 2018 they tried to meet him but Khattar did not meet them. , Later on, the Dalit leaders asked the government to fulfil all their demands within 10-15 days. On May 20th the Dalit again gave an ultimatum to the government that if CM didn’t agree to our demands we will convert to Buddhism in Delhi.
The conversion took place in the wake of Dalit girl was found murdered and before being allegedly gang-raped. The police is yet to solve the murder and gangrape case.
It is to be noted that in Gujarat thousands of people had converted to Buddhism showing their disgust for the Hindu religion. Political observers feel that this is the handiwork of some interest group to gain mileages out of it.
