The bypoll results have come up and BJP has got ample reason to worry about. Very recently, PM Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah have made it clear that northeast states are going to be pivotal for BJP’s success in Lok Sabha Elections scheduled next year.

Today as the bypoll results were released, it became absolutely clear that Congress will be able to increase its tally in Meghalaya. Miani D Shira, who is the daughter of former chief minister Mukul Sangma, won the Ampati assembly seat in Meghalaya today.

There is no denying the fact that this victory has given the Congress 21 seats, making it the single largest party in the state. At present, the National People’s Party or NPP-led alliance led by chief Minister Conrad Sangma, and the Congress, have got 20 seats each.

Currently, the Congress Party is eleven seats short of majority. Previously the Congress Party lost the chance of forming the government as Conrad Sangma with the backing of the BJP formed it. The alliance of five parties is presently ruling the state.

Let’s not forget the fact that NPP has won 19 seats in the assembly elections and had the support of six legislators from the United Democratic Party, four from People’s Democratic Front, and two each from the HSPDP and the BJP, besides Independent lawmaker Samuel Sangma. The figure changed later as NPP increased its tally to 20 after winning the Willamnagar seat. Right now the alliance has 35 lawmakers – four above the magic number of 31.

After the Karnataka Elections, it was clear that no party has got majority. In that case, Karnataka Governor called up BJP as the single largest party. The Yeddyurappa government stepped down after a day and later the Congress – JD(S) alliance formed the government.

Thus Congress has got every right to ask for an opportunity to form the government. It remains to be seen what happens in Meghalaya next. No doubt, BJP is indeed worrried and any sort of de-stability will hinder the future of the saffron outfit in upcoming months.
