Dr Singh said that setting up of this exclusive Brahmaputra Study Centre at Guwahati University will attract scholars from different parts of the world. Guwahati University is one of the oldest Universities in India and proposed study centre will offer an opportunity for research in different aspects of the mighty river Brahmaputra in waterways, physics, hydrology, environment, hydropower production, disaster due to flood and its management etc.
The fund will be provided by the Ministry of DoNER. The Brahmaputra is one of the largest rivers of the world. The first major study at the Centre has already been initiated. It is totally devoted to the research on the causes and prevention of frequent floods in the river. Some of the internationally renowned scholars from across the world will be part of the centre.
The Minister further pointed out that the Ministry of DoNER in the last four years has gone beyond the mandate of focusing only on development works and has also tried to contribute for the enrichment of education sector in Northeast.
He also mentioned setting up of the “Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Study Centre” in IIM, Shillong and commencement of super-specialty cancer courses in DM (Onco-Medicine) and MCh (Onco-Surgery) in Barooah Cancer Institute Guwahati, Assam as a part of the tripartite MoU signed between Barooah Cancer Institute Guwahati, Assam Government and the North-Eastern Council.
