The political graph of current Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is no different than a political opportunist. In the recently concluded Karnataka elections, JD(S) didn’t emerge as a winner but as a kingmaker. His ascent to the throne of the cash-rich state has been interesting, to say the least.

Anyhow, within a week of formation of the government, HD Kumaraswamy has cleared his intentions with a recent remark. He said, “I am not obligated to the 6.5 crore people of Karnataka, but I’m obligated to Congress.”
Previously, during the election campaign, JD(U) in its manifesto, promised that it would waive all farm loans taken from cooperative, private and commercial banks, within 24 hours of coming to office. Now, he doesn’t seem to be sure with it. HD Kumaraswamy is trying to buy time as he has remarked,”There is no question of going back on the farm loan waiver.
I need a week’s time to understand the financial situation before taking such a call. This can happen only after cabinet expansion. I will do it in a week or quit the CM’s post.” The irony is, he has urged the farmers not to commit suicide but hasn’t announced any relief so that the farmers can feel rejuvenated.
#WATCH: K’taka CM HD Kumaraswamy says, “I asked people for clear mandate to do their bidding. But now, I am here indebted to Congress. Some ppl say that I had said that I wouldn’t take anyone’s support to form govt. Who are they to tell me? There are some compulsions in politics” pic.twitter.com/m8cGVbvNYy

Anyhow HD Kumaraswamy’s remark ‘Obliged to Congress, didn’t get a mandate from people’ is a strong jibe at Congress. Let’s not forget the fact that Congress – JD(S) alliance is yet to come to terms with regard to cabinet expansion.
Another Assembly election in the state doesn’t seem to be too far in the state if the two parties cannot solve differences between them. Anyhow, it would indeed be a difficult task for HD Kumaraswamy to implement his own diktat in a government which is dependent on the Congress.
In all probability, things are going to get further dicey when the parties will begin their campaign for next year’s Lok Sabha Election. The role of Congress is going to be very important as they will have ample opportunity to take the upper hand on the present government.
