Nayanika Ghosh Chowdhury – A Dancer, Choreographer Of International Repute

An accomplished Kathak dancer, choreographer and teacher Nayanika Ghosh Chowdhury need no introduction. She started her sojourn to the world of classical Dance when she was four years old. Daughter of railway officer she was born and brought up Kolkata.

She did her Master of Arts (M.A) in Dance from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata in 2005 with distinction and first class. A Master of Arts (M.A) in Bengali Literature from Calcutta University, Kolkata she started performing from her tender age in different stages.

From the last twenty-five years, she has been performing in different parts of the globe and all over India. She received training under the tutelage of several renowned gurus of India like Padmabibhusan Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Vijay Shankar, Smt. Rani Karnaa, Smt Chetna Jalan. She is also trained under Pt. Rajendra Gangani, Pt. Clitresh Das, Pt. Shankar Ghosh, Pt. Rammohan Maharaj, Smt.Saswati Sen to name a few.

Some other major performances include- The Temple of Fine Arts, Shantanand Auditorium, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (ICCR.KL). Nayanika also did a welcome dance for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, collaborated with Malaysian dancers and musicians and performed in different temples, for Malaysian Bengalee association at Port Dickson, Petaling Jaya Civic centre, Kuala Lumpur. She also performed in Bangladesh International Cultural Festival, Dhaka and in different places in Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan and Bagannur in Mongolia organized by ICCR in 2018.

Besides that she has been associating with renowned Padatik Dance Centre (Kolkata), Sangeet Shyamala (New Delhi), Kalashram (New Delhi)& Geetha shankaran dance (Kuala Lumpur).
A resident of Nirvana Country Gurugram, she is always grateful to her husband for his moral support and help. “My hubby is always supporting throughout my dancing career, ” she said with a gratitude. She is blest with a son. When it comes to her hobby she likes to do gardening and reading books.
Nayanika is also a renowned choreographer. She has done several excellent choreographic creations. Some of best choreographic reactions are -Aangikam – based on Natyashastra, Tarannum, Rhythm Texture and Search for Soul, Seashore – in Young Choreographers Festival – at Kolkata, Choreographed for “Sur Taal”: Zee Bangla TV channel, Zee Network, Nritya-Tarang, East-West fusion with Reanate Manescu at Habitat Centre, New Delhi, Manja,Kathak Part with Geethashankaran Lam ,Kuala Lumpur and Kaha-Malika By Repertory of Ninaad foundation.

She is a recipient of several prestigious award and scholarships. She is an empanelled artist of ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) and has performed for Doordarshan Kendra in several programmes. She also received young artist scholarship, offered by HRD, Ministry of Culture, and Government of India 2000-2002. Before that, she also got the national scholarship in Kathak Dance by CCRT, Government of India 1989-1998.

She is a Snatak from Padatik Dance Center, which was assessed by Guru Munnalal Shukla, Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, Chennai, Pt. Vijai Shankar and Smt. Chetna Jalan. Besides that, she is a Nritya-Visharad from Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigarh.

She has twenty years of experience in teaching Indian Classical Dance (Kathak) to different age groups; since 1986, associated with PADATIK DANCE CENTRE (a renowned cultural institution), Kolkata as a student, Kathak-teacher and repertory lead dancer.

This is not at all she is the founder director of Ninaad Foundation and has trained students at Baruipur-Kolkata, Navi Mumbai, Gurgaon and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. “Under the project of NIRMAN by Ninaad Foundation I am imparting training to slum and underprivileged children, spreading awareness and providing opportunities to learn Indian Classical dance and Music and I want to fulfil my dream about dance through my foundation,” she explained.

She has been associated with Bal Bharti Public School, Appejay School at Navi Mumbai, Delhi Public School, Gurgaon as a dance teacher. And a Kathak Guru at Sangeet Shyamala, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. When it comes to abroad, she has been associating with Kathak Guru at Geetha Shankaran Dance, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and faculty visiting guru at Ghungroo Dance Academy, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Because of her astounding performance, she has been awarded “Nritya-Shiromani” title at Cuttack Mahotsava, Cuttack, “Satyabhama” award at Satyabhama Yuva Nriyotsava, Vishakhapatnam and host of other rewards and awards.
