Congress-Led Meghalaya Government Faces An Immediate Crisis

Ever since BJP has shifted its focus to the states of the North East, Congress has been reeling in some of the states. The curious case of Meghalaya is adding more woes to the century-long party. Two independent legislators who were supporting the Congress-led state government has withdrawn support, creating a mini-crisis. Independent legislator Rophul Marak has complained regarding the Congress Party saying,”The Chief Minister has failed to fulfil the aspiration of the people of my Rongra-Siju constituency.

I am answerable to the people of the constituency and the district. They are asking questions as to what we have done in our tenure of five years. The development work in South Garo Hills has been dismal. The main problem is road and communication.” With his withdrawal of support, the Congress Party in Meghalaya Assembly has got 30 legislators – one short of a majority.

At present, there isn’t any serious threat regarding the government but no doubt, it isn’t a good indication for the Congress government looking at the Assembly Elections scheduled next year. The opposition front in Meghalaya is not united at present which needs to be seriously addressed if Congress has to topple from the centre of power. Be it Meghalaya People’s Front or National People’s Party or United Democratic Party – Meghalaya is certainly looking for a change in the days to come.
