Spanish Government Dissolves Catalan Parliament

The political situation in Spain has become complicated. The Catalan leaders previously announced an independent government. The independence motion was passed by 70 votes out of 135 lawmakers in favour of a republic in the form of an independent and sovereign state. The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has dissolved the Catalan government and has formally removed Catalan’s separatist leader Carles Puigdemont and his executive from office. Side by side, the Spanish PM has also called regional elections for December 21 under sweeping powers approved by the Senate. No doubt, the whole motive is to somehow stop the Catalan Government triggering a secessionist movement in Catalonia.

In a televised address the Spanish Prime Minister has said, “We Spaniards are living through a sad day in which a lack of reason prevailed upon the law and demolished democracy in Catalonia. The situation is heartbreaking, sad and distressing.” Apart from that, the Spanish Government has also dismissed the director of the Catalan regional police, the Mossos d’Esquadra and also the Catalan government representatives in Madrid and Brussels. There is no denying the fact that the situation is slowly becoming trickier and unless otherwise there is a direct negotiation, internal harmony within Spain will definitely be a serious question. Side by side, all over the world, there is support and confidence for a separate Catalan state as well.
