All hail the percent sign!

Most online writers try to follow some form of Stylebook. The helpful guide that tells us when to use a semi-colon for instance. When is it appropriate to abbreviate? And so on.

A lot of us use the AP Stylebook. There are times we just laugh at them and do as we want (Sorry, but I will not write it as “IPad” just because it’s the first word of the sentence. It’s “iPad.” Get over it.) And then there are times where you just grin and bear it.

One of those moments was definitely the insane reasoning that we should write out the word “percent” instead of simply using “%.” AP had its reasons… who knows what they were. But as of this week we are freed from this tyranny and can finally write it as the symbol. There are still times AP would prefer we write it out such as in casual use (i.e. “I’m going to give it a zero percent chance of winning.”), but when talking about actual percentage changes… the % has finally become acceptable.

Yes… it’s the little things in life that thrill me.
