Masters of the Universe once again hunts for a director

For those of you keeping score at home, this is the fourth hunt for a Director for Masters of the Universe.

Jon M. Chu dropped out. Then it was McG. As recently as November it looked as though it was going to be David S. Goyer, but he never officially signed on. That aside, he has now taken his name out of the running to direct, but will stay on for the script and an executive producer credit. Apparently, this has been put down to scheduling issues due to his upcoming series, Krypton.

Despite the lack of a director, Sony is holding to a previously announced release date of Dec. 18, 2019. That always makes me nervous as we’re working more towards an arbitrary date then a quality Film. Yes, there is still nearly 34 months to go, but in the production of a film that is almost the blink of an eye.

Considering this project has been floating around in the ether over at Sony since at least 2012, maybe it’s time to finally say this just isn’t going to happen. As much as I love the toy line and animated series, it is an odd property overall. The last live-action film was a nightmare, maybe there is something to be learned from that?

Oh well, the wait resumes for someone else to take over the property.
