Absolutely. The characters they’ve chosen are all really singular and could each carry the show that they’re on. They’re bound together as a band of underdogs for as long as we choose with this show, but it’s conceptually tailor-made for spin-offs.
This had already been hinted at somewhat with the announcement of Squirrel Girl being included in the series, but this was the first official confirmation.
The line-up of the team beyond Squirrel Girl is unknown at this time, but there has been a rather large rotating roster over the years, so there are more than enough to pull from.
What is also unclear at this time is how, and if, the team will mesh with the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Burke did say a tie-in to the upcoming Cloak & Dagger series – which will also air on Freeform – is quite possible despite the different tones they will take. This seems like an odd call, however, as the Netflix shows have easily integrated with just passing mentions to what has happened in the films. There’s no need for the characters to actually appear.
Still no word on when New Warriors will premiere, but the assumption is sometime in 2018.
