Tony Kornheiser (right) has launched a successful podcast and bought a restaurant after two careers: one as a Washington Post reporter/columnist and another as co-host with Michael Wilbon on the Emmy award winning Pardon The Interruption on ESPN.

When you hit the age of retirement, you’re often overjoyed by the option to hang up your work boots for good. As you approach your fifties, and then the end of the decade, it’s something that you can look forward to more and more. And then when you reach that incredible age of sixty or whatever age you’ve opted to retire at, it can feel so ellating. No. More. Work.

No more early mornings, long days, aches and pains. No more commutes, colleagues, or angry bosses. Now, it’s just you and what you Love to do most. Gardening. Walking. Reading. Sleeping! What could be better than that?

Well, although life in retirement can be a joy, that ‘honeymoon’ period can wear off. It won’t for everyone, but it can. If you think that you’re going to love days filled with nothing to do, then maybe you will. But you may also find that before long, you’re a little bored. You miss the routine, the people, being active and contributing to something. So maybe you like the Idea of starting a new career?

Of course, this isn’t going to be the same as working for the man. Of getting a job that you hate doing. Because you’re retired, and it’s not about that. Instead, it’s more about the enjoyment of work, and pursuing a passion. Doing something you love and using the free time that you now have to do something that you’ve always wanted to do, or create something for yourself! Here’s how.

Following A Passion

To start with, one of the most exciting things that you can look at here, is some of the things that you’re passionate about. Maybe you didn’t get to pursue your passion when you were younger? So do it now. Maybe it’s your time! Maybe you want to write that book or be a coach or do the thing that you always wanted to do!

Looking More Into An Interest

From here, you may also want to look more into some interests that you have, or things that you’ve always been quite curious about. Maybe you’ve always loved history, or a set genre of film, or travel? But you never had the time to indulge in it? Well then, now you have the time for it. So you could pursue this and see where it takes you both interest and career wise.

Learning Something New

However, that may not be all you want to do. Maybe you want to learn something new? Do you want to speak a language or learn how to paint? Sure, you may not be able to turn it into a career right away, but you might be able to do it in the future, so you need to learn the skills now!

Learning Modern Skills

The next thing that you might want to do, is think about picking up new skills that are technology based. And yes, you can teach yourself to this, as well as seek expert tuition on it. For this, you might wonder is it possible to download Notepad++ for Mac, or whether you need to get a new computer or specific software. Then, you can work on these tech skills, for you own advancement.

Get Creative

At this stage, you may also want to indulge in your creativity a little more! If you’d love the idea of writing your own book, maybe now you can start? Because it’s never too late if you have an idea and you want to run with it! But you will need to commit to this yourself, and spending the time writing and working to bring this to life. But now that you have the time, that may be perfect for you.
Raise Money For Charity

From here, there’s another option that you might want to consider here, and that’s for you to work on different charitable initiatives. And you can do this in different ways. You can do your own fun-raisers, work with a local charity, or just donate too – and this is often rewarding for you in retirement.

Start A Club

As a step on from that, it’s handy to see that this doesn’t have to be an actual career choice. You could just see it as such. A great example of that, is choosing to start a club. It could be a book club or a local sports team or interest group, like bridge. Or, maybe it could be a new local chapter of a big organization that isn’t currently working where you are? It can feel like a job to run, but it’s really all for fun!

Build A Business

But at the same time, maybe you have the skills to create a company? Even if it’s small! Sometimes, you may have wanted to do this when you were younger, but you didn’t have the time. So now may be the time to try out this business idea, and see where it takes you.

Help The Community

Or maybe you’re not that interested in creating your own thing, but you do love the idea of helping others? When this is the case, why not help your community a lot more? You may find that you want to make the most of the time you have free and you want to make a difference. So for this, volunteering your time or creating projects for the local neighbourhood could be the perfect kind of work for you.

Get A Part-Time Position

Finally, you may even want to go back to work. And no, this doesn’t have to be something formal or hard. It could be a little part-time job that allows you to interact with people and do something enjoyable for a few hours in the week. Working as a retiree can be fun. Maybe you can work in a shop you like, teach others, or freelance in your own time. And this could give you the satisfaction you need.
