Kenya Safari: Mark and Jane’s 50th Wedding Anniversary

August 17, 1968

We celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary with a safari to Kenya.

During our orientation meeting in Nairobi before heading out into the wild, Nancy announced it to the group, so our safari started with a round of applause and congratulations all around.

That was just the beginning.

After a couple days of game drives, it became known that one of the tour group was celebrating a Birthday. The tour guide had us all sign a birthday card for him.

The next morning his wife smugly asked if everyone had rose petals and towels forming a heart on their bed. Of course we didn’t and let the wisecracks fly about the birthday boy getting lucky, etc. etc.

That evening a cake arrived after our evening meal with much fanfare.  When it was placed in front of the guy celebrating his birthday, we all had a good chuckle after we discovered they had written “Happy Anniversary.”  We just assumed that it was a language misunderstanding – or that they considered birthdays to be anniversaries of one’s birth.

Later after we had gone to the room for the evening, I got a phone call saying from the wife of the birthday boy saying: “I have good news and bad news.”

The good news: I had left the camera bag on the back of my chair, but she had it and would send it to our room. The bad news was the room with rose petals and heart shaped towels was meant for us!  During the check in, our guides had switched the registration paperwork so our room assignments were switched too.

We had a good laugh and commented that this was a better story than if everything had gone according to plan.

As they say on the infomercials.

But wait, there’s more.

Another days passed and after dinner the lights dimmed and the wait staff paraded around the room singing and carrying another cake!  This time, they put it down in front of Nancy and I.

When we showed the cake to the table, they exploded in laughter.  Our tour guide was suitably embarrassed. He looked at his instructions given to the restaurant staff and showed us the copy that had our full legal names direct from our passport.

Mark Lee… and Nancy Jane…

Everyone had signed a card for us and the tour guides gave us an ebony carving of a rhino as a gift that will always bring back memories of the 50th Wedding Anniversary Safari of Mark and Jane.
