Being a Morning Person!

Tags: morning
The title of this blog post is probably enough to make most people want to crawl in a hole and never come out, but please hear me out. I am a huge morning person, I love waking up early and being productive. It's become a bit of a weird obsession. If I am not out of bed by 9am, I feel like something is going terribly wrong and that the day is going to waste. I am probably the only teenager who feels the need to wake up early, but I am going to explain the benefits of being a morning person in this video.

Being a morning person means you achieve so much more in the early hours of your day which leaves the rest of the day to whatever you want. If you achieve everything you need to achieve by lunchtime, then you have a lot of time to enjoy yourself. It has been scientifically that we are at our best between 5am and 12pm, so why not utilise this time. I am so much more efficient in the morning and find it much easier to plough through homework early in the morning, than cramming it in late at night.

It's hard to become a morning person over night and it does take discipline. If you head to bed at 3am there is no way you will be able to get up at 7am and be at your best. I have insomnia and take sleeping medication, which generally helps me fall asleep between 9:30 and 10:30 (apart from tonight as I have forgotten to take it). This way I get a decent amount of sleep and am full of energy early in the morning! If you struggle to get up in the morning, try going to bed earlier and cultivate beneficial morning and evening routines.

In the morning, setting alarms is the number one way to get yourself going. I set myself three alarms, with fifteen minutes between all of them. The middle alarm is the time I need to get up, the one before that being a wake up warning and the last one being an emergency one if I am failing to get up. I always place my alarm on the other side of the room so that I have to get out of bed to turn it off which makes me falling asleep again much less likely. I find having an incentive really useful for getting out of bed such as a cup of coffee, a TV programme or something important that I can't miss. Exercise in the morning is really useful for invigorating yourself and waking yourself up. It could be something gentle like Pilates or yoga, or something more intense like a run or cross-training. If you are keen to become a morning person, set out a plan for everything you need to do in the morning and keep at it until it becomes second nature. Making your bed shortly after you get out of it is useful, as an unmade bed is simply calling you to go back to sleep. Making it up indicates that you are ready to start your day.

It's easy to procrastinate at night and put off getting to bed, especially when Netflix and iPhones exist. However, sleep is really important for looking and feeling good. As teenagers we need between 8 and 10 hours of sleep a night, and the average teenager probably gets a solid 6. Sleep before 12am is more valuable than sleep after, therefore try to get to sleep as early as possible. Before bed, turn off your electronics and move them away from the bed so you are not tempted to keep checking social media. Another tip is to have a hot bath to relax yourself or do some hard-core exercise to completely exhaust yourself. Eventually, your body will become accustomed to earlier bedtimes and earlier wake ups and will respond accordingly.

I hope this helps if anyone is wanting a lifestyle change and wants to become more productive. Of course it's not always possible to be a morning person, especially if you have been out at a late party the night before. However, the most successful and efficient people out there utilise their time to the best of their ability and always seize the day (cringe cringe cringe).

Lots of love,
