With the exception of in national ad campaigns (in which case it is necessary for accuracy), to offer a retail product for X amount "plus tax" is unethical and deliberately misleading. As such, it degrades our culture and promotes social values which impair our society's positive progress.
At the moment, I don't have time to spell out the analysis, so until I get around to it, give the matter a little thought... unchallenged, universally accepted practices are frequently parasites on humanity's growth.
