🔗 Changing with the Times

As a fellow typography enthusiast, I enjoyed Rubens question if it’s time to like Times and Times New Roman again now that it’s no longer the Default, especially given it lends itself to be a classic.

But the world has changed. Almost no website uses the browser’s default Fonts, not even proverbial sticks-in-the-mud like me. Tools like Microsoft Word have also since switched to Calibri, so we’ve had milquetoast documents for a decade or so now that don’t use Times. Is it Time(s) to bring it back? Are we… are we allowed to?

Rubenerd: Is it safe to like Times and Times New Roman yet?

And that sneaky Times font-face in your post? Genius! Reminds us that sometimes, the best way to answer “is it okay?” is simply to do it and see how it feels. Who knows, maybe a Times renaissance is just around the corner!

The world has moved on, with websites rocking custom fonts and Calibri holding the Word crown (although Aptos is about to change that) But I posit, nostalgia is never out of style. Times still holds its own charm, especially for longer reads where those beautiful serifs make the text glide smoothly across the screen.

Also, Chrome really doesn’t let any other font be default when there’re no fonts specified either.

Maybe the key isn’t about “allowed” or “safe,” but about finding the right place and purpose for Times. It wouldn’t be your go-to for a snappy social media post, but for a thoughtful blog or even a passionate letter, it adds a touch of timeless elegance.

At the end of the day, typography is about expressing yourself, not chase trends.
