They were held down by Watch Edition’s similarity to the far cheaper aluminum models and ironically by the cutting edge technology inside. A Rolex can be counted to last centuries and be passed down the generations. An Apple Watch is guaranteed to use usefulness within a decade.
The Apple Watch Ultra targets a different set of customers — technology enthusiasts who keep up with gadget announcements the way sports fans follow their favorite teams. To them, the Apple Watch Ultra is a wearable talisman representing their enthusiasm for Apple and the latest technology[2].
Apple Watch Ultra succeeds where Watch Edition failed
I think of the Apple Watch as the best compromise of a watch + fitness tracker that I’d wear in real life. That’s why I bought the first one and why I didn’t jump for the second one. At least I won’t until the battery life begins to be compromised.
The watch never realized itself as a post-phone computing device. However, it’s turned out to be the best accessory to the phone by augmenting it with fitness tracking.

P.S. In a world where AI can be realized, the watch still promises us of an interface where a large display isn’t fundamentally required. However, we are a few materials, physics and software discoveries away from that reality.
