Daring Greatly, Brené Brown

Brené Brown is one of the top leaders in personal development. Her books on building self confidence have landed her at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list five times, which means she’s written some of the top selling self help books of recent years. She’s a research professor at the University of Houston and spent the past 20 years studying courage and vulnerability. These two traits may not seem congruous but Brown believes that we need to be vulnerable in order to reach true courage. Brown is a thought leader who took the long-held beliefs that people had about bravery and turned them on their heads.

One of her bestsellers, Daring Greatly, delves into this idea of how being open and vulnerable can produce great courage in a person and this can drastically change the way a person lives their life, and how it affects every facet of a life – relationships, careers, parenting, and so forth.  Brown spent 12 years researching this phenomenon and came to the conclusion that exposing our fears and experiencing uncertainty is a valiant act that can change lives. Not only does vulnerability open us up to fear and disappointment but it creates a space for love, joy, and acceptance to be born.

In short, when we refuse to show our true feelings and embrace who we are – flaws and all – we get farther away from our best selves – a person who is strong and confident whilst still being cognizant and aware of weaknesses and vulnerabilites. Girl, Wash Your Face, Rachel Hollis

Rachel Hollis is a mother of four and the founder and CCO (Chief Creative Officer) of The Chic Site, a website dedicated to empowering women and helping them through the ups and downs of daily life. The caption to the post was about how she was proud of her body, stretch marks, flabby tummy and all, because they showed her power as a mother and a woman. The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom is one of those self-worth books that stands the test of time, which is why we’ve included it here despite the fact that our goal was to choose the best self help books for confidence that were published recently. That’s how great it is.  Published in 1997, it now has over six million copies in print and it’s been translated into 40 languages. The book calls out the self-limiting beliefs we place on ourselves and provides four truths that appeal to anyone. Often seen as a kind of spiritual code of conduct, the four agreements feel as if they are a breath of fresh air but they’re also so simple.

The four truths embody grace and wisdom, but they’re also incredibly freeing. These concepts are:

  • Be impeccable with your word
  • Don’t take anything personally
  • Don’t make assumptions
  • Always do your best
