To Try Men’s Souls by Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen is the first novel in The American Revolution series. This was one of my finds from Better World Books that I had been searching for.

I loved this book, I am just putting that front and center. The Battle at Trenton is the subject for this book. The struggle to get to Trenton is the bulk of the book told from various viewpoints. From General Washington, a young private in the Continental Army, and Tom Paine.

I will admit, I cried especially in Tom Paine scenes. His struggle to find the words to reignite the fire of revolution in the struggling country and the pressure to do so was enormous. Tom Paine wasn’t meant to be the main character but for me he truly was.
