Relocate Government Departments

On Parler, the hottest new social media app for unrestricted and uncensored free speech, Richard Grenell, Former Acting Director of National Intelligence, suggested the most brilliant idea. I am going to take the idea and run with it because it is so logical.

Diversity is one of the hallmarks that the left uses to bash the right with, as lacking and being utterly devoid of, fairly or not mind you. So, as suggested let’s encourage diversity in the Federal government as there is not Constitutional reason that every federal agency must be located in DC. While once it was much more vital that federal agencies be in close proximity to one another that is no longer the case in our interconnected world.

Why can’t the IRS be relocated to Des Moines, Iowa? Why shouldn’t the Department of Agriculture be relocated to Ardmore, OK? Wouldn’t it make sense for the FDA to be located in St. Paul, MN or the Department of Education to be located in Jackson, Mississippi? Is there a compelling reason why the CIA cannot be relocated to Lincoln, NE or the FBI to Missoula, MT?

Seriously, why aren’t these and other agencies being spread out across the country? These states and cities are all part of our nation, they all contain well educated Americans who would be happy to serve their nation without having to relocate to the swamp in DC. These local economies would benefit from the influx of federal agencies and that would only help the country at large.

The DC swamp has a serious problem. It thinks of itself as insular and isolated from the rest of the nation and fails to comprehend it as a result. Federal employees are public servants, they are not a specialized class that should only interact with the rest of us when we need something from them. Public servants should live amongst the public.

Imagine how much more responsive and focused these departments would be if they regularly meet and interacted with regular Americans not just other federal workers. Department of Agriculture executives that lived amongst farmers and ranchers or Education employees that could see the hardships failing public schools has on their communities first hand.

There is no time like the present to upend the institutionalized federal government and spread those opportunities and resources among the states. The employees would be more diversified, thought processes and political alignments would become more diversified as a result. Governmental departments would be forced out of their comfort zones and would have to become accustomed to life outside the privileged bubble that DC has become.

I know what you are thinking. What about all those Federal office buildings that would suddenly be emptied and the low income jobs associated therewith? Well, they can be converted into housing for the homeless. They can be converted into job and educational skill centers to help struggling citizens find gainful employment. They can be turned into schools, classrooms, libraries or hospitals. Some of the uglier buildings can be abolished and their land be used for green outdoor spaces. There are an unending plethora of ideas on how to convert office space into space that can be better utilized to serve the nation.

DC should not exist as this isolated, self-aggrandizing bubble of elites that the rest of the nation is effectively cut off from. Those jobs should be open to all Americans, which technically they are but you then have to relocate to DC. Americans should not have to give up a better quality of life in exchange for a well paying federal job that is almost impossible to get fired from. Federal Departments should be relocated across the country for the benefit of all citizens. Diversity within every single agency would improve. The swamp would be drained. The nation as a whole would become stronger and more secure as a result.
