"What the hell is 'Epic Mom' and why are you reading it?"
I was tucked away in the men's locker room, like usual. So that I could read in peace, though it rarely happens like that. I was reading MOV and Marianne's new book, "Epic Mom: Failing Every Day a Little Bit More Than You," whilst occasionally giggling.
One of my coworkers peered over his locker at me, judging me. As if a 27-year-old man reading a book called "Epic Mom" all alone in the men's locker room was somehow suspicious.
"Are you an epic mom?" I asked him.
"What?"
"Are you an epic mom?"
"...No."
"Well neither am I. So I'm learning. Maybe you should too."
He didn't seem too interested.
I suppose I got so defensive because it is such a good book, whether you are a mom or not. Or even whether you are epic or not.
Both of these women are such wonderfully talented writers, that reading this book is a treat. It is jam-packed with stories, some of which I didn't want to end. But the fact that each story is three or four pages long makes it the perfect book for someone like me who doesn't have many long spaces of free time.
That being said, "Epic Mom" was my companion on more than one trip to the bathroom.
I'm a guy. I'm allowed to say stuff like that.
The only trouble was that I was usually so entertained while doing my business that "Epic Mom" would follow me to the couch, where I would lay down and read, ignoring whatever it was that I was doing before the urge to go to the bathroom had overtaken me.
While most of the stories have to do with being a mother, the messages are universal and the humor is unavoidable, regardless of your sex, age, or parental status. Dad's out there might want to check out stories like "A First Wife's Perspective" or "The Felon and the Flat Screen." I found myself laughing the most at "Occupy Nordstrom," "Radical Change to Motherhood," and "Peter Brady Let Me Down" (as well as Tracie's forward before the book even starts).
If you are a fan of MOV's blog or Marianne's blog or column, you will obviously be a fan of this book. And if you are not a fan of either of their blogs, then you clearly haven't visited them yet. Because if you had, then you'd be an instant fan. Do yourself a favor and check both of them out -- it is like a free preview of their book!
I highly recommend the book, and applaud Julie and Marianne for a job well done. Go pick up your copy!

When you are a writer, you will sometimes come across wonderful moments in other writer's work where you just become jealous. A particular little gem will ignite this spark in your brain that is so good that it makes you jealous that you didn't think of it first.
There are tons of these moments in this Book, so I was jealous. Like, the whole way through.
