As Homeschooling parents, it is important that we know what some people see as the cons of homeschooling... the reasons why you may wish to not homeschool. These include:

(1.) Homeschooling can consume a lot of your time as a parent. This is especially true whenever your children are involved in hands-on activities which you've chosen to use as learning tools, instead of traditional books and paper. Planning, driving to, and participating in those activities (or waiting for them to be over) constitute the bulk of many homeschooling parents' days. Single parents who homeschool their children face even greater time restraints. This calls for a great deal of creativity in order to balance work and homeschool activities.

(2.) Homeschooling can lead to financial restraints as 1 partner, in a marriage, often foregoes full-time employment outside of the home in order to homeschool the children. This can be a big sacrifice for families who are struggling to balance their budget.

(3.) If you choose to homeschool, you're going to be with your kids almost 24/7. If you don't enjoy being with your children, then homeschooling isn't for you. While it can sometimes be difficult to be with your children all of the time, most homeschool parents view their daily
interactions with their children as opportunities for personal and familial growth.

(4.) You may find that your older children have limited choices in team sports. Community sports activities can fill the void for younger children but teens often find limited opportunities to join sports teams, especially competitive ones. It honestly depends upon where you live as to whether or not your children can participate on public school athletic teams.

(5.) You'll be living outside of the norm. Sometimes homeschooling is seen as a threat to those who are unable to accept ordinary parents succeeding where trained professionals often fail. You'll need to develop a bit of a tough exterior but even then, negative comments and criticisms will still filter in occasionally. If you're unable to live with these, then homeschooling is not for you.
