Temptation

‘The Temptation of St. Anthony,’ is an oft-repeated narrative that has been imaginatively rendered by numerous visual artists - from Bosch to Dalí - throughout the history of art. It concerns the supernatural temptation reportedly faced by Saint Anthony the Great during his sojourn in the Egyptian desert in the 3rd Century.

This marvellously grotesque representation of the theme is by the Polish painter, Daniel Pielucha (b. 1959). Positioning his work within what he terms ‘Polish Surrealism’, Pielucha emphasizes his respect for the history and tradition of Polish painting, especially that of the second half of the nineteenth century.

His biblical, mythological and folk themes, which are rooted in the folklore of the Polish countryside, its beliefs and customs, tell us about the human condition in a specifically Polish surrealist convention.

The artist actively participates in group exhibitions of Polish painting and his works have been exhibited in private collections at home and abroad.
