Family Day

View from my back door
Sunshine on snow
Today is the newest statutory holiday in New Brunswick. It is called Family Day, meant to give working folks and children a day to spend with their family during wintery February. Since it's a Monday, it is a three-day weekend for many people. It's not a statutory holiday for federal employees, but most stores are closed. Our little family in New Brunswick stayed home. Big surprise.

We had blue skies, partly cloudy but gorgeous. The sunshine on the snow was cheery. The wind picked up as afternoon turned to evening, with some howling and tugging at the windows making it a bit eerie. I was happy to be inside and not alone.

Having stayed up until 2:30am, I was surprised to  be up for the day at 9:45am. There were two cats lying on my right shoulder and one at my feet: Tommy, Owl and Molly Mayhem, respectively. Baby had slept with Toad, as usual. Foxy was in his bed.

So what did I accomplish today? Let's see. I fed the cats, watered the caged birds, hand-washed some delicate items, worked in bathroom, drew a bubble bath for Toad, cooked for the chickens while Toad bathed, made us and Foxy pancakes and eggs for brunch, took my meds,  and had a nice long bath. All before getting online to monkey about with email, news, reading blog posts and getting upset with my brother on Facebook over his continued support for Don the Con. I cried a bit and then let it go.

When I opened the jigsaw puzzle of the day (hiding the photo) instead of going with one of my usual cuts I made the daring decision to try a different one, even though it would have fewer pieces than my usuals.  I went with the 91 Piece Lizards cut and found it surprisingly challenging to connect the arms, legs, head and tail of the lizard pieces together. It was pretty cool. The Chinese lanterns were lovely.

I also practiced French via Duolingo for quite a long while today. There were five units on my tree that had become un-golded since yesterday and so I had to strengthen each one back to gold: Verbs: Compound Past;  Verbs: Conditional;  Adjectives 4;  Abstract Objects; Afterwards I rewarded myself with a French story Le Serpente ! , which was very entertaining.

Later I cooked us some Bistro tri-color vegetable pasta rotini with pesto and some stewed tomatoes leftover from yesterday, with Parmesan flakes. I like feeling as if I'm eating my vegetables while eating this pasta that is mainly wheat but also includes spinach, tomato and carrot powder. It looks appetizing and it is tasty, too.

This evening I watched the 1997 comedy Fathers' Day, starring Robin Williams and Billy Crystal, which was on the flip side of the Forget Paris DVD. When Robin Williams' quirky character, Dale Putley, appears he is trying to commit suicide. In tears, I nearly had to stop watching the movie, thinking about the painful secret Robin Williams kept for so many years before he actually did commit suicide. He was great as one of the possible fathers of a missing teenage boy, the thought of which gives him a reason to live. I had seen this movie years ago but had forgotten how funny it is. Seeing Robin Williams play his role made my heart ache with joy and sadness at the same time.

Sadly, I did not see or talk to any of the rest of my family on Family Day. When my SIL is off work they are too busy to Skype me. He Skypes his parents in Italy instead. He's off today, tomorrow and then Thursday and Friday of this week. I'm hoping to see the boys Wednesday.

Bedtime needs to be earlier than usual due to Toad having a follow-up visit with our family doctor tomorrow morning to see he still has shortness of breath and a cough after his week of antibiotics.
