ICU blues

My Uncle recently had a triple bypass for his heart. I went to go visit him in ICU (the intensive care unit). It was around 7 at night and the nurses had just changed shifts.

I walked through the large steel doors with a finger print identifier next to it. Visiting hours had just started so there were not many people yet. Then I saw my uncle. He had a tube stuck down his throat to help him breath. I can only imagine with that thing down his throat all he is thinking of is a block of ice to easy the pain on his dry, raw, throat.

There were huge desks in front of every bed with charts and comment boxes to keep record of blood gas, and heart rate and much more.

The other patients were in the same conditions. One guy had a gunshot wound in the side of his head and he was rolled up into a little ball on his bed wishing he was at home.

It was one hell of an experience for me. I commend the staff of that hospital whose in the business of saving lives.

If you have every experienced whats the inside of an ICU is like and have something interesting to say please leave a comment.
