Detroit Realities #870

The Detroit School System spent nearly $1 million on out-of-state travel in 2019. The next highest school district in the state only spent $18,000. Among the mis-spent million was a $250K trip to tour Italy. Meanwhile, even the top high school grads in Detroit flunk out of remedial college courses. The Detroit Teachers Union is pressing for even higher pay; even though their average compensation is far higher than the state’s average for teachers. I guess they’ll be spending more in over-seas excursions in the future, for “fairness…”

Detroit’s infant mortality rate hasn’t changed in a decade – over half do not survive until their first birthday. This isn’t just the worst in the nation, it is on par with 3rd world nations; higher than Romania, Botswana, and Panama. The underlying reason: Detroit has more single-mothers (80%) under age 20 (18%) than any other U.S. city. These young women are usually not in good health themselves and are ill-equipped for pregnancy and childrearing. A second problem is not many primary care physicians accept state Medicare health insurance. The third reason for death for Detroit children under age 18 is murder and stray bullets. Detroit’s under 18 child death rate per 100,000 is 120, the next closest in ranking is Philadelphia (with a population double Detroit’s) at just 95. It may be worse but abortions in Detroit are over 2 times the state average.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A 48-year-old Detroiter was shot at a gas station on E. McNichols near John R. Detroit Police drove him to the hospital.
  • A 34-year-old Detroiter was shot and killed in his home on Lemay by E. Vernor. Detroit Police have no further information about the murder.
  • Detroit Police are searching for two suspects that shot-up a liquor store window in trying to get to the cash register, but failed.
  • Detroit Police are searching for two home-invasion suspects that broke into a home on McDougall and were caught on surveillance cameras.
  • Ohio authorities improperly released felon, Talleon Brazil, after facing criminal charges there. His family brought him back to Detroit. US Marshalls and the Detroit Police tracked him down and arrested him for drug charges. Brazil was sentenced to 15-40 years in 2010 for carjacking, robbery, felon in possession of a weapon, and illegal drug manufacture.
  • 21 dogs were seized at a Detroit home on Abington, as part of an illegal dog-fighting ring.
  • Michigan State Troopers arrested a Detroit man for selling drugs in Corktown on Labrosse St. At some point, the suspect slipped the cuffs off and ran, but was re-captured.
  • A 22-year-old Detroiter, Jawan Medley, was charged with first degree murder of a 25-year-old woman as she sat in a car on Morang by Cadieux. Unbelievably, a Detroit judge denied him bond.
