Detroit Realities #868

So, Kwame Kilpatrick won’t go away. A Detroit executive and State Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo are trying to get President Trump to intervene and release former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from prison. They claim Kwame’s sentence was too long and he has served 7 years, which is long enough. Ok, was it really a light sentence? Let’s review:

Convicted of 20 counts of extortion, bribery, fraud, racketeering, and tax evasion. Basically, the Mayor was a 1-man crime wave that cost the city of Detroit:

  • $8.4 million lawsuit settlement for firing police officers looking into criminal wrongdoing in his office
  • Kwame personally profited $1.6 million that the government could track (reality is likely a lot more because his father skimmed 5% off of most large city contracts)
  • Kwame was defiant at every conviction and refused to consider any deal to reduce his sentence

When you continue to commit crime, run the city off the cliff (selling the city’s assets for pennies on the dollar) to cover a single-year’s budget shortfall, and then repeatedly destroy your legal team’s ability to get you a reasonable sentence – in my opinion – Kilpatrick got off very light and should definitely serve the whole 28 years that he earned.

Two days after stumping for Kwame’s release, Sherry Gay-Dagnogo announced she is going to run for Detroit Mayor in 2021. I presume she wants Kwame to set a precedent of short prison sentences for corruption – before she’s caught for corruption at her turn in the office…
