The Detroit 2019 official results are in: there were 272 homicides in Detroit, up from 2018’s 259. Non-fatal shootings were 764, an increase over 2018’s 739. The one brightspot is carjackings in Detroit fell from 5.8/week to 4.6/week – you know, just like your neighborhood. A few more Detroit statistics for 2019: 6.3 robberies per day and 2.3 rapes per day. Personally, I feel safe in Detroit because there are only 25.5 assaults per day.

In other Detroit news: WalletHub produced a survey of 182 U.S. cities for job prospects using 31 key indicators. Scottsdale, Arizona came in first and Detroit came in dead last. https://wallethub.com/edu/best-cities-for-jobs/2173/

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A 20-year-old Detroiter was found fatally shot near Livernois and I-96 about noon. Detroit Police have no information about the circumstances of the murder.
  • Federal prosecutors are now pursuing Racketeering charges against UAW Presidents Gary Jones and Dennis Williams – and may signal a government takeover of the union.
  • Detroit Police are asking the public’s help to catch 2 murderers from New Year’s Eve. The two approached a man on Schoolcraft. The older of the pair started shooting at the victim as he ran away, he then handed the gun to his younger partner who ran down the victim and fatally shot him. The victim was Giovanni McQueen and the Medical Examiner said he died from a gunshot in the back.
  • Detroit Police are asking the public’s help to identify a man who took several shots at a 22-year-old woman outside of a Coney Island on Grand River, striking her once.
  • A Detroit Police officer wants a new trial. Cpl. Dewayne Jones repeatedly punched a mentally ill woman at Detroit Receiving Hospital and was convicted of using excessive force after jurors watched the video.
  • A woman on a Detroit bus started throwing food at the driver, causing an accident on Mack Avenue. No injuries were reported but lots of damage to the bus and an electrical box and street sign. Too bad for Ann Arbor, the regional transit authority is spending $2 million for a bus route between Ann Arbor and Detroit.
