Detroit Realities #855

Detroit leads the nation in corruption cases. In the last few years, 108 labor leaders, politicians, police officers, and bureaucrats have been charged with federal corruption. Cases involve allegations of: kickbacks, bribes, fraud, money laundering, embezzlement, conspiracy, theft, and obstruction of justice.

Speaking of corruption, Taylor’s Mayor was just charged with stealing $200,000 from his campaign and taking $41,000 in bribes from a real estate developer.

A dozen former gang members are community activists now in Inkster. The group meets once a month to focus on ways to better the community and save youth; so that they don’t go down the wrong path like they did. One member said we tore up the Inkster/Detroit community and now we want to give back. Inkster’s Mayor, Patrick Wimberly says he feels a sense of gratitude toward the group in helping out.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • Detroit Police have identified a suspect in the homicide of Robert Ellis, but do not have enough evidence for a search warrant. It has been 4 years since Ellis was shot and his body arsoned in an abandoned home in Detroit.
  • Detroit Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the shooter who wounded 2 people walking on McGraw. A 17-year-old girl and 19-year-old man were injured after they heard shots.
  • An argument between two men on Harper by Cadieux prompted both to pull their guns and start firing, one man died at the hospital, the other was arrested at the scene.
  • A 23-year-old Detroiter walking on Somerset when a car pulled up to him and two men got out of the car with firearms, demanding his personal items. He complied but they shot him anyway. The shot prompted a witness to leave his house, firing his own shots at the thieves, but they got away. The mugging victim survived.
  • A 29-year-old Detroiter was standing with a few people outside at Fullerton and Washburn when a black SUV pulled up to them. After some words were exchanged, one person got out of the SUV and shot the 29-year-old, who is listed in temporary serious condition.
  • A man died from a gunshot wound right in front of the Dearborn Police Department. They won’t say if anyone has been arrested.
