Detroit Realities #839

The Detroit Inspector General, Ellen Ha, is urging Detroit’s government leaders to “restore integrity” by disciplining staff who abuse their authority within the city. Her office has recommended punishments for wrongdoing and favoritism by Mayor Duggan’s staff (such as deleting e-mails during active investigations). Corruption and mismanagement has required recent federal oversight of:

  1. The Detroit Police Department
  2. The Detroit Water Department
  3. Emergency Manager over the city during 1.5 years of bankruptcy
  4. And state oversight of the Detroit Public School System

Per usual: billionaire Dan Gilbert was able to get his Detroit buildings placed into an Economic Zone, even though the area doesn’t qualify, based on average income for the area. So again, downtown Detroit is vacuuming money from the rest of the city and the rest of the state to benefit 2 billionaires that buy influence through lobbyists in Lansing and Washington.

Wayne State University is located in Detroit. Guess how many freshmen are from Detroit each year? Just 10%! To try to increase Detroit representation at the school, WSU’s President announced free tuition for Detroit residents. Three WSU Governor’s have renewed their call to replace the President because of a continual lack of transparency and details about his policy changes before they are publically announced.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • An attempted robbery at a Detroit liquor store on Hayes resulted in a man being shot by a rifle.
  • U.S. Marshalls are linking up with Detroit Police to capture their top 30 domestic violence offenders that are fugitives. There are rewards for some of the offenders.
  • Relatives of a 63-year-old woman who was slain in Detroit, Linda Parker, have put up a reward to catch whoever beat her to death with an unknown object.
  • Armed robbers fatally shot one of two victims sitting in a car on Hayes in Detroit, police have released images from surveillance video but have no suspects.
  • A multi-car crash in Detroit at 7 Mile Rd and Greenfield, around 4pm, caused injury to 8 people.
  • A car speeding down I-94 in Detroit near 8 Mile Rd, lost control, ran up an embankment, struck a tree and caught fire, killing the driver.
