Detroit Realities #834

The FBI is investigating whether the big 3 auto companies illegally funded UAW President, Dennis Williams’ cabin at a resort in northern Michigan. A grand jury is looking into $1 million in payments to contractors for the luxury home.

I learned a new term today. A particularly bad part of Detroit is the Brightmoor area. When you look away for a moment and something stolen, it is called “The Brightmoor Vapors.” Because your item seemingly vaporized in a moment. Apparently, theft is VERY common in the Brightmoor area.

The city of Detroit is rolling out Kiosks with food recommendations and free Wifi. (NYC’s mayor did this 2 years ago and the city was furious – homeless swarm them for electricity, watching movies loudly, and making life miserable for anyone living or working near the kiosks.) Detroiter’s fear it will have cameras and facial recognition to catch criminals – I mean privacy violations…

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • 5 people were in a car fleeing police, struck another vehicle, and then crashed into a Detroit home and caught fire. Two of the car’s occupants were killed in the crash. Police suspected the occupants matched the description of suspects doing Smash & Grabs in the suburbs.
  • 46-year-old Detroiter Clayton Talley was denied bond and charged with first degree murder of Lakeyla Robinson. He shot Robinson, who drove herself to the hospital, but did not survive.
  • Detroit Police are asked the public’s help to identify 3 carjacking & robbery suspects caught on video at a gas station on Plymouth Road. The station is a block west of a “Junk Car Cash King,” a car dealer/scrap dealer.
  • Detroit Police responded to a call, finding the body of a man in his 30s with multiple gunshots on Hartwell; the shooter is unknown.
  • Anthony Lovejoy and his girlfriend are suspects in a Detroit gas station shootout where 2 people were shot from dozens of shots between both groups. Lovejoy was caught in Kentucky while on the run.
  • The White House confirmed that the “underwear bomb” maker from Al-Qaida was killed in Yemen. The bomb was on a flight to Detroit on Christmas 2009, but the bomber couldn’t get it to ignite. The bomber was arrested and sentenced to 4 life term sentences.
  • 7 Patients contracted Legionnaire’s disease when they visited the Macomb McLaren Hospital in the last 12 months. The CDC is investigating water sources at the hospital.
  • A 42-year-old standing outside of a Detroit liquor store on Nottingham was shot. Bullet fragments were lodged in his face and upper arm; and is listed in temporary serious condition.
  • Detroit Police are searching for Smash & Grab thieves who stole an ATM at a check cashing business at 7 Mile Road and Telegraph.
