Detroit Realities #833

Business Insider published a ranking of the “Most Miserable City” in the U.S. They used census data such as: crime, drug addiction, jobs, income, abandoned homes, etc. Detroit ranked at the top at #3, just behind #2 Port Arthur, Texas and #1 Gary, Indiana.

In other Michigan news, the annual budget is always approved at midnight before the fall deadline. Governor Snyder stopped that and always had them approved in April. Now, we have new governor Whitmer who did little over the summer and then walked out on budget talks. One political analyst called it, “The worst miscalculations a governor has ever made.” Because she now has to use her veto pen to cut democratic programs by her own party (fixing roads, autism programs, etc.)  So the deadline is looming and the citizens lose again

According to the U.S. Attorney, a growing number of Detroiters are scamming Social Security, taking money being sent to their dead relatives. For example, Detroiter Kendrick Gills cashed $500,000 worth of checks from a deceased relative over 14 years. Investigators have been unable to recover the body. The prosecutor says “there are more deceased payee fraud cases here than any other region in the country; about 1 person a month.” They can steal over a hundred thousand from the government and only get 1-2 years in prison, judges don’t give the elderly any prison time.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A 33-year-old Royal Oak resident was arrested for e-mailing 9 Royal Oak churches with bomb threats.
  • A Detroit neighborhood is being overrun with raccoons. Apparently, they are being dumped by one of their neighbors runs a pest control business. They are causing damage and a nuisance but the DNR won’t do anything about it because they falsely claim he is releasing them on his own property (neighbors say they see him releasing raccoons in the woods several lots away).
  • Three people crashed into a Royal Oak motel with a Dodge Durango, trying to do a smash and grab to get at an ATM machine. But it was too heavy for them to lift so they fled. The front desk clerk suffered a minor injury.
  • There was a double shooting in the checkout line at a Detroit store at Joy and Southfield Fwy. A security guard was arrested after shooting two people.
  • A 36-year-old was denied bond in facing 5 felonies related to a fatal fire and arson at a Detroit home on Sorrento Street. There were 3 people in the home at the time.
  • A Detroit food truck on the riverfront, “Detroit’s Original Seafood” burned after a propane tank exploded, throwing the owner from the truck and burning him. He put the fire out but had to be treated for burns for 3 days at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He now has a GoFundMe page to repair his truck and medical bills.
  • Several bridge ramps at I-96 and I-39 in Detroit will be closed for several weeks for urgent bridge repairs. Reporters photographed giant holes in the concrete with metal grating the only thing tires were driving on.
