Detroit Realities #827

A Detroit school is the very last place you want to be educated: lowest national test scores, very high dropout rate, and high illiteracy rate. Add to this, dangerous attacks, facility decay, and no money. So what is the Superintendent doing about it? Nikolai Vitti just announced, “I will not allow I.C.E. officials into Detroit schools without a warrant, we will not co-operate with federal law enforcement!” Awesome, please quit and go work at Taco Bell.

In other city news – the property tax foreclosure auction in Wayne County was heavily criticized for increasing the vacancies, blight, speculation, and displacement. So Wayne County came up with a new program called, “Auction Before The Auction.” After reporters looked into this new program, it was cancelled because it exacerbated all of Detroit’s blight problems!

A lawsuit was filed against 2 Detroit Police officers. According to the victim, the officers went to a home, searching for a suspect. A woman opened the door and said, “He isn’t here, it is just me and my 2 dogs, you cannot come in without a warrant.” An officer yanked the door open and her two dogs went outside and out back to their food bowls; where officer #2 shot them both. When the woman went to help her injured dogs, officer #1 laughed. She is seeking redress for violating the 4th Amendment and the reckless endangerment of her animals (one died).

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A man was sitting in his Detroit home on Fischer when a burglar broke in. The two struggled and the burglar pulled a gun and shot the homeowner in the hand and fled. Luckily, Detroit Police arrested him just a few blocks away.
  • Detroit Police are investigating a double shooting between two 19-year-olds on Memorial Street by the Southfield Fwy. One died and the other is in critical condition.
  • After 11 years of non-stop complaints, the Detroit Police dept. finally closed the Penthouse strip club on 8 Mile for being a prostitution hub. But it will only be closed for a year.
  • Detroiter Deangelo Martin was finally charged. A serial killer and serial rapist, Martin was caught because a woman escaped during an attack.
  • 52-year-old Christopher Staton was a 19-year veteran of the Detroit Police force when he was convicted of conspiracy in illegal drug trafficking. Staton profited with two drug dealers and used his position to keep the police away and steal from their drug suppliers. Staton will likely be sentenced to 10 years and a fine of $10 million.
  • Detroit Police recovered a dead body reported on Melville Street by Dearborn Street, the investigation is just starting.
  • A 51-year-old ran a stop light in Detroit at Kelly and Morang, striking a 39-year-old mother and her 9-year-old son. He did not stop and dragged the 9-year-old who is not in critical condition. The hit & run driver was eventually caught by Detroit Police.
