Detroit Realities #825

How’s that turnaround thing going??

So far this year, there isn’t 3 block area that has been crime-free around Gratiot Avenue. Many people don’t go outside unless they have to with crime being: robberies, sexual assaults, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and stray bullets. Locals call the zip code 48205 as “4820-die.” Commander Eric Decker of the 9th Detroit Precinct, says, “Crime along almost all busy Detroit streets is high: Greenfield, 7 Mile Rd, 6 Mile Rd, Vernor, etc. so Gratiot is not any different.” Locals say, “It gets really bad after dark and even dangerous to drive with lots of drag racing and ATVs.” 71-year-old Oris Floyd says, “My home is the only one standing on my street, lots of drug dealers and prostitutes. The city doesn’t care about this neighborhood.” For many businesses, you have to be buzzed to enter because they’ve had too many robberies from gang members.

Meanwhile, for the second year in a row, Detroiter Charisse Woods is going to the World Youth Chess Championship in India. Now at Cass Tech High School, she’s been playing chess since age 7. Now she’s age 14 and says you learn patience, focus, and mental endurance from playing chess.”

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • In just the last week, 30 cars were stolen in Ferndale. My guess is law enforcement should start looking for them in Detroit
  • A popular Detroit strip club on 8 Mile Rd, The Penthouse Club, may be closed down due to long-time instances of soliciting prostitution inside the club.
  • A Detroit mother is pleading for her 19-year-old son to turn himself in. In separate incidents, Paul Brady stole her gun, beat her, shot his uncle, and tried to set an apartment on fire. U.S. Marshalls have him on their Top 10 List.
  • Detroit Police are searching for the 5th and last suspect in a home-invasion robbery that turned into a fatal shooting on Grayton earlier this year. The last suspect is Deandre Houston (of course, he’s a former convict and a gang member).
  • The family of Danya Gibson celebrated the anniversary of her death by keeping her legacy alive. Gibson was stabbed to death in high school by a former friend over a boy. She was killed at her Warren high school a year ago, the classmate is facing murder charges.
  • A 49-year-old man was found dead in his living room from a single gunshot on Artesian Street in Detroit, no further details are available at this time but police consider it a homicide.
  • An EMS truck responding to an emergency call was struck by a sedan in Detroit that ran a red light at Gratiot and Seymor. The two people in the sedan are listing in critical condition.
  • A 47-year-old man was killed in Detroit during a hit & run on Gray St. and E. Warren Ave.
