Detroit Realities #796

Two years ago, Detroit suspended the towing license of Nationwide Recovery. Since then, car theft in Detroit has fallen by 31% (although it is still sky-high). Why the improvement? Because Nationwide Recovery was a key partner in a huge stolen-car theft ring, working with car thieves and some criminal Detroit Police officers  in the car theft dept. Even Highland Park Police Officers “recovered” stolen vehicles before they were reported and then used the vehicles for themselves and then destroyed all the paperwork.

Mayor Duggan used $185 million in federal money to replace 20,000 street lights with LED lights (88,000 street lights don’t work in Detroit, this was a small patch job). The mayor did so with great fanfare. What’s that? Within 3 years, the new lights are going dark and failing. The lights not working show charred, cracked, or burned areas. The mayor bought these defective lights from California that is probably going to declare bankruptcy. There is now a class action lawsuit and it will take over $10M to repair all the Detroit LED lights. More wasted taxpayer money…

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • The FBI busted a Detroit crime ring the successfully targeted casino high-rollers for carjackings and armed robberies. The criminal crew came up with the plan while in prison; once they were caught – the ring leader received a sentence of 37 years in prison.
  • Detroit Police have arrested 2 for the most recent Greektown shootings, but 2 more gunmen remain at large.
  • A pizza delivery driver was mugged in Detroit by Livernois and Joy Rd, he was uninjured.
  • Two people were shot at a Detroit memorial near I-96, witnesses refuse to name the suspect. Both victims survived and were privately conveyed to the hospital.
  • A 34-year-old Detroiter was arrested for shooting a man and while fleeing at a high speed, he lost control and hit a parked car. The victim survived. The perpetrator is a convict and tried twice to kill his victim (once with his car, once by shooting) – but the Detroit judge set bail at just $50,000.
  • A Detroit family accidentally let a puppy out while taking another dog for a walk. A police car on patrol was flagged down to help with the search for the puppy. When an officer spotted the friendly dog it went toward her and she shot it “because it could have attacked her.” The family is raising money for the extensive surgeries that the dog now requires.
  • A Detroit woman and her 3 children were carjacked on Plymouth Rd. by Joy Rd. Police say he is armed and dangerous based upon prior arrests.
  • A 24-year-old Detroit woman was fatally shot in a drive-by near Mack and E. Grand Blvd. Police have no witnesses or suspects. In the same general area, a 38-year-old man was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting.
