Detroit Realities #794

A Detroit Police officer calls his uncle’s wife, “A Black Widow, she’s the devil.” He is describing 68-year-old, Beatrice Tennyson. Tennyson suffocated her husband, Darvin, then she and her son took his body to a Detroit alley and burned the vehicle with the body inside – to cash in on his million dollar life insurance policy. Relatives said Tennyson spent all of her husband’s income on designer luxury items, but wanted more. Tennyson and her son were arrested and are being held without bond (because they were arrested outside of Detroit with lenient judges).

The Detroit Police Chief is increasing patrols in downtown and parks to reduce violent crime. But it is being criticized because this will reduce patrols in neighborhoods making them even less safe.

Large retail chains avoid Detroit because of crime. Meijer took the plunge and opened a shopping center in Detroit on 8 Mile and Woodward. How has that worked out? The 36th District Court is slammed all-day-long with shoplifting cases at that Meijer.  40% of shoplifters are arrested again for shoplifting. All Detroit retail chains rely very heavily on surveillance and technology to reduce shoplifting. Unlike Detroit, in Oakland and Macomb counties – shoplifters get more serious prison time.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A 35-year-old Detroiter was living with his parents at 8 Mile near Telegraph. He thought, “His parents had done something to his car,” so he shot both of his parents. His father was fatally shot twice in the head but his mother only pretended to be dead when he kicked her to make sure she was dead. After he left, she was able to call her daughter for help. The son was arrested immediately and had a fixation with his old red Honda and spent a lot of time just sitting in it.
  • A Detroit man drove himself to a gas station for help, having a gunshot wound to his face. The clerk called an ambulance and he is now in stable condition.
  • There was a double-shooting at Connor and Christy streets, a 16 and 20-year-old shot each other.
  • A 61-year-old Detroiter went outside to investigate a noise at 2am and she got into a struggle with a 49-year old burglar. The criminal is in serious condition.
  • While sitting in a car waiting for someone to return from shopping, a 25-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint on McNichols. Detroit Police have a surveillance photo and is looking for the suspect.
  • 30-year-old former convict, William Wilbourn-Little, was just convicted with 3 counts of 1st-degree murder for a triple-shooting at a Detroit White Castle on W. Warren. The 3 victims were all in their early 20s.
  • A Detroit man with a gunshot wound drove to a Detroit Fire Station for help. He is listed in serious condition at the hospital.
