Detroit Realities #782

Detroit’s Gayanga company was hailed as a model business by Mayor Duggan in demolishing homes. Gayanga is now under investigation for improperly excavating debris at multiple construction sites. About a dozen companies have been given “stop work” orders for fraudulent or improper work. Is it just me or is Mayor Duggan “duped” about every week??

Detroit’s The Foundation Hotel downtown booked rooms for a group of 23 rooms because of its proximity to Cobo Hall. Just before the event, the hotel learned that it was a pro-Trump group attending an event – so the hotel cancelled their discounted reservation, claiming they could book individually at the regular rate. Instead, the conservative group got a discounted rate at another hotel.

Detroit’s 6th Police Precinct was determined to have “widespread racial animosity” and Police Chief Craig, who initiated the audit, says there will be firings and demotions. The Precinct Chief was already replaced.

What were you doing when you were age 21?

21-year-old Detroiter, Samaria Dorsey, shot a man and left him to die on the sidewalk Christmas Eve. It turns out, she was attempting to rob 19-year-old Frans Younan and that didn’t work out. Younan was a happy kid from an Iraqi family that enjoyed soccer and basketball; another Detroit tragedy.

The Hamtramck Historical Museum discovered a well built and preserved log cabin in Detroit. According to an archeology professor who examined it and photos from the era, she thought it was built pre-civil war. While preservation talks were ongoing, and knowing it was a possible historical artifact – the Detroit Land Bank quickly demolished it and tossed any remains into a landfill.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A man was killed at Detroit’s New Blue Star Lounge when a suspect threw a firebomb at the building, he was burned beyond recognition.
  • A Detroit mother was intoxicated while driving, leading to a crash that killed her 3-year-old son. She could be sentenced from 3-15 years. The boy was not restrained when she ran a red light and he was ejected from the vehicle and it rolled over him.
  • An online date turned into a Detroit robbery. A couple had been communicating online and met for the first time by 7 Mile and Wyoming. It turns out the date was with 27-year-old Dominique Moore, a life-long criminal. Thankfully, he was quickly caught and has 12 charges just from this event including kidnapping and being a felon with a firearm.
  • There was a triple shooting at a Detroit motorcycle club at 2:30am, no one was killed.
  • Two Detroiters in their 20s were arrested for car theft after being caught in the act and tried to flee by I-75.
  • A 35-year-old Detroiter is facing 14 felony charges related to a shooting death at 8 Mile Rd and the Southfield Fwy. An argument turned into a shooting at 12:30am.
  • 29-year-old ex-convict Julian Akyan of Detroit was charged with illegal dog fighting. Police recovered 30 dogs at his 3 Detroit homes, with injuries from bites.
  • Detroit Police have arrested a 17-year-old for the attempted abduction of a 5-year-old girl from her backyard two weeks ago. He tried to pull her over a fence but her sister yelled for their father and he fled.
