Detroit Realities #777

No rest for the brand new Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel. She just announced charges for a Detroit racketeering ring that scammed the state of over $140,000 in fake income tax credits. 12 Detroiters were charged with criminal enterprise and larceny.

The Detroit City Council passed a “Fair Chance” ordinance this week. The new law makes it ILLEGAL to ask a potential tenant if they have a criminal history. The law prevents landlords from making informed decisions to protect other tenants in the building and neighborhood. This law allows you to do a background check only later in the application process – another regulation to operate in Detroit.

An arsonist was caught on video attempting to burn a Detroit gas station on 8 Mile Rd in the city’s west side. Police are circulating the images, hoping someone will recognize him and turn him in. He opened a can of lighter fluid from the aisle, poured it all over the floor and tried to light it.

Always another scam in Detroit…

The Wayne County Treasurer, Eric Sabree, runs the home foreclosure auction each year, one of the largest in the nation. The Detroit News discovered through a FOIA request that Sabree’s wife and relatives have been illegally participating in these auctions with dozens of properties. Plus, they were given a free pass to violate conditions of the sale, which should have been seized by the county, but were not. Records show relatives were awarded properties at less than half the tax debt on the properties.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A man sitting in his car at 10am on Detroit’s Snowden was approached by 2 armed men who demanded money. The victim went inside his house, grabbed a gun, and began firing shots at the suspects. One robber was fatally shot while the other stole his car and fled.
  • What were you doing at age 21? Tony Lamont Gates is 21-year-old and was charged with First-Degree Murder in gunning down 33-year old Gary Harris in E. Jefferson in Detroit.
  • Two Detroiters in their 20s are in temporary serious condition after being shot while sitting in their car on Lahser Rd. They were approached by armed masked men who opened fire at them at 9pm.
  • 46-year-old Tonacida Dixon was arrested after firing shots from her car at another vehicle at 7 Mile Rd. and Livernois. Dixon riddled the other car with bullets, but no one was injured. Naturally, she was given bail for just $3,000!
  • Two Detroit brothers and ex-convicts, Aubrey and Arthur Stanley were just convicted of First-Degree Murder of two other brothers at 8 Mile Rd. and Schaefer.
  • An 18-year-old was robbed and shot by two assailants on E. Jefferson. Detroit Police took him to the hospital and he is now in stable condition.
  • An arson suspect was detained after a 3-story apartment building in Detroit went up in flames. The fire department evacuated the building and tried to control the blaze, but the building is likely a total loss – thankfully, no one was injured.
