Detroit Realities #776

Detroit’s Davenport Shelter for girls has been under state investigation for a long time: overcrowding, under-staffed, and sexual assault. The latest – Detroit Police say that two girls ran away and were about to be driven to Atlanta to be sold into the sex trade (one of the girls says she was raped). An online review shows there are 9 sex-offenders living within a quarter mile of the girl’s shelter.

Detroit Police have detained several people for questioning in the death of 36-year-old Jahill Acuff. Acuff is a mechanic who was financially generous with family and friends. His family believes this generosity is what made him a criminal target and that Acuff was setup by a female acquaintance to be robbed and murdered in his Detroit home. His family was concerned that his expensive jewelry would make him a target in Detroit.

Wallethub’s annual study of city health metrics just ranked Detroit at the country’s 9th Least Healthy City in America. San Francisco was named the healthiest. I guess they don’t count heroin users because San Francisco has more drug addicts than high school students

The State of Michigan has no money to pay wrongful conviction judgments. Nathaniel Hatchett from Sterling Heights was awarded $500,000 when DNA evidence exonerated him for a rape conviction where he served 10 years in prison. A judge ordered the state to pay, but they claim there is no money. His attorney says, “First they destroy his life and now they refuse to make up for it, it is shameful – they’re hurting him for the second time.”

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • Detroit Police have no details on a man gunned down in his 30s at 10pm on E. Jefferson. They are searching for a person of interest who was seen with a handgun nearby.
  • 50-year-old Detroiter, Darrell Harris, was charged with raping an 11-year-old girl (on two occasions), the daughter of his ex-girlfriend.
  • A 54-year-old Detroit was gunned down in his car near Linwood and Oakman Blvd. Witnesses say he drove up to an area and honked his horn. Two armed men approached him, ordered him out of car and then fired multiple shots at him.
  • Two young Detroit men, ages 17 and 20, were walking down Rutherford Street. Three armed men approached them and demanded their valuables. The young men ran but were shot by the muggers, thankfully, they will likely survive at the hospital.
  • A 36-year-old Detroit man met another man for a blind online date by Gratiot and 7 Mile Road. The interaction developed into a fight with one man shooting the other multiple times. The victim was able to drive to a gas station to get help and he is listed in critical condition.
  • Eastpointe Police are searching for Daniel LaFaive for sexual raping underage neighbor girls and threatening them not to tell anyone. A couple 12-year-old girls told police and now he is on the run.
