Detroit Realities #657

The union boss of Engineers Local 324, who held the position for 9 years, was just sentenced to 30 years in prison and $250,000 in restitution. John Hamilton plead guilty to extortion and money laundering of union members to support a lavish lifestyle on top of his $250,000 salary. Prosecutors believe he extorted over $500,000 plus fraudulently charged to the union $51,000 for extravagant restaurant meals. Hamilton was caught because of an investigation of a Chicago money manager, John Orecchio, who was caught stealing $24 million from Detroit area pension funds for unions. Among Orecchio’s crimes, he admitted he gave a bribe of $10,000 to Kwame Kilpatrick to get the city to invest in his fund. Orecchio was sentenced to 9 years for fraud and theft.

Detroit owns 3 golf courses and it is the same problem every few years. They get into an argument over which company will manage them, too late, and the courses are closed for the part of the summer. So the city misses out on the desperately needed money and Detroiters have to leave the city to play golf.

A Detroit School Board meeting ended early when a long-time activist, Helen Moore, kept shouting and interrupting the meeting. She says 2-minutes of public comment isn’t enough time.

The last 600 rape kits are being tested from the 11,000 that were found abandoned in a Detroit Police warehouse in 2009. Since the kits were finally tested, 10-years-too-late, they’ve identified 818 serial rapists and convicted 130. So how many women were raped from 2005-2018 because the assailants weren’t caught sooner? Probably thousands!

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • 29-year-old Detroiter Gerald Day is being tried for breaking into a Grosse Pointe Farms home at 4am and attempting to rape a 12-year-old-girl at gunpoint. Fortunately, she was able to break free. That same week, Day had previously raped a middle-aged woman during another home invasion.
  • Just west of Detroit, a 2-year-old boy was found dead. He was in the care of his biological mother’s ex-husband.
  • A couple were sitting in a car in a Detroit driveway when a man approached, firing several shots through the rear window, killing a 23-year-old woman.
  • A second Detroit teenager has just been charged with 2nd degree murder for beating up a 61-year-old man and leaving him in the middle of 8 Mile Road, where he was killed when a truck ran him over.
  • Detroit Police arrested a Detroit man who committed a “smash & grab” spree in Novi and Farmington. He’d steal a van and ram through the front door of businesses at night and grab all he could.
  • Detroit’s Palmer Park school has been closed because of severe mold from water damage. The district superintendent assured people that the school is totally safe until the Environmental Health & Safety inspected and shut it down.
  • A home invasion was thwarted on Detroit’s west side when a woman screamed. He broke through a window into an apartment, waking the occupant and her screaming scared him off.
