Detroit Realities #631

Vernest Griffin was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon for threatening several employees at a company. The Romulus Magistrate set bond at $5,000, so Griffin was released for just $500. When Griffin failed to show up to court (the only reason for bond), the Wayne County Judge still did not increase his bond. So, what was Griffin doing? You know, just murdering people – exactly as he threatened to do. He killed Keith Kitchen and Eriberto Perez. He was looking for a third victim at another company, but he wasn’t in that day. Griffin was arrested after a shootout with Waterford police.

The City of Detroit announced a budget surplus of $54 million. Wow, hurray – we’re saved! Wait, what? It doesn’t include unaffordable pension shortfall of about $500 million. So yeah, only a politician can say a -$450M deficit is a $50M surplus – a public company CEO would go to jail for that. (Crain’s Detroit hired an expert and he said Detroit is also using an unrealistic mortality rate to make the pension deficit appear not as bad as it really is).

Section-8 housing is a crime magnet and it is personified at Detroit’s Colony Arms Apartments on Jefferson. Drug deals, shootings, domestic assaults are daily occurrences. Now it turns out, the Apartment managers extorted homeless and took bribes to move people up the waiting list.

Detroit is cracking down on slumlords and just closed an apartment building on Appoline. It is unlivable because of waste water in the basement; the water then knocked out the electric and heating. But the owner says the City of Detroit is to blame. He said, “I call the Water Dept. every single day and record the conversations. I also record every conversation with people that they’ve sent to the apartment. The city’s demolition next door made drainage pipes unusable and the city won’t do a thing about it. I’m no slumlord and haven’t been collecting rent – and I keep them apprised. The blame is 100% on Detroit mismanagement.”

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • U.S. Marshalls are searching the Detroit area for Charles Naranjo for a home invasion in Van Buren Township. Naranjo already has 9 felony convictions for violent crimes, including assaulting a police officer. It turns out he’s also wanted in Colorado for kidnapping, burglary, and aggravated assault.
