These men and women never met Hummel before Sept. 28. That day she was in an accident in West Harrison, Indiana. Hummel and her friend, Clyde Reynolds, were on a motorcycle when an SUV turned into their path.

What happened next likely helped save Hummel’s life: About 100 bikers were passing by and many of them are first responders.

Massie Township Fire Chief Donald Fugate said, “We could see a vehicle sideways. Got up there and found a motorcycle planted in front of a Suburban. Two people laying in the street.”

“Just so happens they were on a ride that day on a benefit ride to benefit me and Clyde, maybe. I’m grateful,” Hummel said through tears.

A couple of weeks ago, Local 12 interviewed the group about the charity ride to raise money for multiple sclerosis research at UC Medical Center. A few days later, they were working to save Reynolds and Hummel.

“People don’t understand the toll it takes on first responders. You train. You practice. You go out and make runs, but when you lose a patient, it still affects you, and, I mean, it’s hot, sweaty. We’re laying in the middle of the street and just doing everything you can,” Fugate said.

The group has stayed by Hummel’s side ever since. Hummel says the timing of the “MS Warriors and Support Angels” was everything.

“I think that the universe, God or whoever places people, things, places at the right time at the right place at the right moment for the right people,” Hummel said. “I don’t even know how to begin to repay them. I don’t know if I can, but I want to.”

Hummel doesn’t have an exact release date from the hospital yet. She’ll have to go through physical therapy after she’s released. Her new extended family members say they’ll be there for her recovery. The “MS Warriors and Support Angels” are planning a fundraiser to help Virginia with her medical bills.
