SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) — One motorcyclist was shot and killed and a second has been hospitalized Friday after gunfire erupted on the 210 Freeway in San Bernardino, which has been closed until further notice.
Officers responding to the eastbound 210 Freeway at the 215 just before 4 a.m. discovered the two riders laying in lanes when they arrived. Shawn Fowler, 44, of Utah, was riding with his wife when they stopped for a mechanical problem.
The second man was shot in the shoulder and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.
The trio, who wore clothes with insignia indicating they were part of a motorcycle club, were reportedly on a road trip to Mexico. Investigators are looking into the possibility that they were part of an outlaw biker gang.
The eastbound lanes were shut down until about 11:15 a.m.

Jurors have heard Christopher Harrison’s eyeballs were ruptured in the attack in February 2016.
Matthew Barnes, of Hastings, and Oliver Wilkinson, of St Leonards, both deny grievous bodily harm with intent.
Anne Penfold, bartender at the Carlisle pub in Hastings, said Mr Wilkinson threatened her.
Jurors have heard Mr Barnes was the president of the Sussex Hells Angels motorcycle club and Mr Wilkinson was part of the club’s “support crew”.
The court has been told Mr Harrison was targeted because he did not want to join the club.
‘Barely breathing’
Miss Penfold said when she found Mr Harrison “his body was curled in a foetal position”.
She said: “He was unconscious, breathing, although barely. He eyes were so very badly bruised.”
And she added: “It was hard to make out it was him. His face was swelling a little bit like a balloon.”
She told the court she was able to call for help from police when their van pulled up at the nearby junction.
“At that point, Ollie [Mr Wilkinson] screamed at me from across the forecourt ‘no police don’t you dare’,” she said.
Miss Penfold said she swore at Mr Wilkinson.
She said Mr Wilkinson later told her he respected her because she hadn’t spoken to police, but she told him she had “zero respect” for him and “zero intention of keeping my mouth shut”.
‘Can’t see fingers’
Miss Penfold told the court Mr Wilkinson later told her if she talked to police she and her children would be next.
But Mr Wilkinson’s defence barrister Andrew Selby suggested she misheard what his client had said.
Jurors heard Mr Harrison’s sight was badly affected in the attack.
Mr Harrison has claimed Mr Barnes, 48, of Victoria Avenue, head-butted him and Mr Wilkinson, 50, of Duke Road, punched him.
Defending Mr Barnes, Paul Evans said to Mr Harrison: “You did pick out Matthew Barnes when police conducted an identity procedure, but I suggest to you that Matthew Barnes was not the man who head-butted you.”
Mr Harrison replied: “He was the man who head-butted me.”
Mr Selby asked Mr Harrison: “You didn’t see where this blow, this punch, came from did you?”
“No” Mr Harrison replied, “But I certainly felt it.”
Mr Harrison went on to say Mr Wilkinson had been to his left and it was from there the punch came from.
The trial continues.

The Lynch family from Canton, Ohio, was among the first group of shoppers on Friday to enter the 2018 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Swap Meet, brought to you by Federal Motorcycle Transport.
The event is taking place at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
It did not take parents Tom and Melissa Lynch long to find a clean-looking 1974 Honda Trail 70 for their son Sean.
“I want [Sean] to grow up having an appreciation of vintage bikes,” Tom Lynch said. “This Honda is clean and a lot of the hard work has already been done to it.”
It is the family’s tenth time attending AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, and the family isn’t done shopping yet.
“We showed up with an empty truck and a pocket full of cash,” Melissa Lynch said.
“I am looking for some of the bikes of my youth,” Tom Lynch added. “Maybe a Kawasaki two-stroke. The swap meet is great. There’s a great selection this year.”
Father and son Turk Mason and Gordon Mason had not made an purchases yet, but the Marcellus, N.Y., family had put together a shopping list for the event. An AMA Charter Life Member, Turk Mason and his son have attended VMD for the last 13 years and bond by rebuilding and restoring vintage motorcycles.
“We build them together and ride them together,” Turk Mason said. “We have a farm down in the Catskills we ride at.”
“I found two things I want to buy already,” he added. “I’ll catch hell from my wife for buying them. I’m looking at a Rickman frame right now.”
Gordon Mason added, “We’re looking for Bultaco, Norton, and Ducati parts too.”
