The Winter Night Garden, London

A pop-up auditorium may sound like a doubtful experience, however Backyard Cinema’s ‘The Winter Night Garden’ is a must-go…

Backyard Cinema, is a completely unique and alternative way to watch some of your favourite Christmas classics during the much loved Christmas season such as: Elf, Love Actually, Beauty and the Beast and our chosen classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. The pop-up cinematic setting is in the heart of South London inside Newington Causeway’s latest all-day food market.

The theme screams ‘winter’ and includes an entrance that can only be described as your ticket to Narnia. As you approach the rustic wardrobe the 1930s clad attendee tells you to make your way through to your film, but all is not as simple as it may first appear. As the wardrobe doors open, there are fur coats galore hanging up which you have to push to one side in order to get through. However, on the other side…it is simply Christmas bliss!

A small tunnel lit up by twinkling trees then leads you into a snowy looking forest with the iconic Narnia lamp in its prime place. You then make your entrance into the auditorium and the atmosphere is magnificent.

Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby were singing away on the Big Screen as we walked over to the bar. Hot cider, mulled wine and home-made mince pies were being sold for reasonable prices and the snow machines next to the big screen were producing the most wonderful effects before the film began.

We took our seats on the comfortable bean bags and wrapped ourselves up in our blankets, with hot toddies in hand. We were ready for a cinematic experience we would never forget…

It really is a ‘Wonderful Life’ (very fitting film).

If you haven’t yet immersed yourself in this pop-up auditorium, then make your way through the magical wardrobe doors. The cinema runs all year round and showcases several different seasonally fitting themes, so if you have missed out this Christmas you still have a chance to visit in 2017.
