Storm Clouds Clearing? 3 Weeks Since Brexit

So am in the UK and the sky hasn’t fallen in. I haven’t noticed people shouting abuse at one another in the streets. Britain has a new Prime Minister. The storm has calmed around here and I think that it’s is fair to say that the majority of people in the UK have a lot more interest in politics than they have done for decades (the last momentous time in UK politics that I remember, was Tony Blair being voted in as Prime Minister in a landslide victory in the 90s – but then I have been out of the country for a while). The Government ship has been transferred to what is perceived to be a safe pair hands in Theresa May and now there is nothing to do but wait and see how she gets on.

And meanwhile, life carries on. It’s a privilege to be home seeing Family and friends at the moment. Am loving every minute, though time is flying already.

5 differences between living in Kenya and living in England.

  1. If you live in England, you need to book into to see friends 3-6 months in advance, whereas in Kenya most gatherings are arranged a couple of weeks before, or else right on the spur of the moment.
  2. if you live in England, you have far less free time in your day due to cooking, cleaning, gardening, driving, maintaining, commuting, working, so while creative opportunities are there, it’s hard to find a moment to grab them. In Kenya, we can drink delicious coffee and ponder indulging in some creativity but there are less resources at our fingertips. (however, I do need to look more into MOOCS (massive open online courses or open class/university learning over the internet).
  3. If you live in England, ‘days out’ and excursions are super expensive. Family activities at theme parks, water parks etc carry a hefty price tag and that’s before you have budgeted for the train ride there or the cost of parking.
  4. In England, summer festivals are all the rage and they are no longer just about music. Now artisan food, yoga and motivational speaking is thrown in. The bad news for teenagers is that the entire family is getting in on the act. Sorry love, this year mum and dad are coming too!
  5. By this time of year, after 8-9 months of cold and dark conditions, England is crying out for good weather yet still experiencing rain showers, so for many a UK stay-cation is out of the question. Answer to the problem? Head out of the country on Easyjet flights for short stints in Southern Europe to top up on Vitamin D. We’re off to Portugal tomorrow in our effort keep up with family. Very exciting. Watch this space! (so glad Portugal won UEFA EURO cup final – perhaps they will more forgiving about us leaving the EU.)
